We are delighted to welcome you to our Visitor Guide to the Highland of Scotland focusing on The Great Glen stretching from Glen Coe and Fort william in the south thru the Ben Nevis mountain range, Loch Ness and all the way up to Inverness the capital of the Scottish Highlands in the North.
This region which forms the very heart of the world renown Scottish Highlands includes a fabulous diversity of landscapes and attractions and some of the finest natural scenery anywhere in the world.
We aim to assemble here in one easy to use resource all that the vibrant communities of this region have to offer our visitors from around the world.
Great Glen Direct aims to provide visitors to the site a taste of what it would be like to come here and explore for themselves and to help them plan their holidays in terms of where to stay, where to visit and what to do.
What is greatglendirect?
Great Glen Direct (GGD) is designed, built, marketed and maintained by local people experienced in the tourism industry who know and love this special region forming the heartland of the Scottish Highlands. We know what is needed and that it's not being provided elsewhere.
GGD uniquely combines many of the latest web technologies like interactive maps, local search and news feed generation and focuses these solely on the task of marketing this area and the businesses within it.
GGD works more like a search engine than a directory - with it you can instantly, from every page header, search our galleries, shops, on-line booking facilities, local news and business listings sorted by relevance or distance from any required location. GGD already has more listings for this area than almost any other web directory and we've only been going since end November 2005. Similarly, our News section is now one of the most comprehensive Scottish news databases on the web.
The aim of greatglendirect.com (GGD) is to provide a comprehensive directory of all the businesses and visitor attractions within the Great Glen area in a straightforward, easy to use format, to be accessed by both potential visitors to the area and local people. Each business will have total control over their own entry, enabling it to be updated as frequently, or rarely, as the owner wishes.
Why do we need another directory?
No doubt you will have been constantly bombarded by alternative global directories but GGD will be different in that it will be locally focused, as well as being run locally, by owners of businesses in the local area. By encompassing such a tremendous range of different businesses, GGD will not only prove to be an invaluable source of information for those who have already decided to visit or live in the Great Glen, but will also attract visitors who may not have been aware of the wide variety and high quality of attractions available in the area.
State of the Art Technology - Re-inventing Visibility
GGD is a new concept in web directories providing substantial added value over alternative sites for both users and subscribers alike.
From the user perspective we have combined the strengths and eliminated the weaknesses of 3 different information technologies in a new and innovative way - directories, search engines and repositories. Find out more about how GGD is re-inventing visibility.
From the subscribers' view point we have created a unique sales engine with an innovative publicity multiplier. This literally multiplies your one entry into many visible around this site, elsewhere on the web and indexed with the top search engines. It's a unique concept in web marketing. We've provided detailed subscription information pages with examples of how this works.
To this mix we've added other cutting edge web technologies like local search, interactive maps and RSS news feed generation and compilation.
GGD technology is leading the way - you won't find its equal anywhere.
Information is the key
The GGD will store a huge amount of information but the software has been designed to make navigation around the site very simple by organizing every entry in relevant sub-categories which can be reached with just a couple of clicks of the mouse. Not only can entries be accessed by type of entry but also by geographic location. These features will enable a user to find information quickly, easily and then make a well-informed choice about where to go or where to stay in the Great Glen.
Is it very expensive?
No!
A basic entry on GGD will be free to local businesses. Many businesses will choose to upgrade their entry to a Showcase entry for a small fee, which can be paid annually, bi-annually or every three years. The principle behind GGD is that every business in the area should have a free entry, so that the GGD is as comprehensive as possible. Businesses from outwith the Great Glen will not qualify for free listings, but will be able to pay for advertising space in the site.
